Evenings of Beautiful Music - for a Beautiful Cause

JAKARTA: 20th June 2008 --  On Saturday, June 14 last the St John Bosco Parish in Sunter- Jakarta, with Fr. Noel Villafuerte sdb as its pastor, held a two hour concert, rendering 14 classical and modern pieces. It was an evening of beautiful music.
The Bosconian Mini Orchestra comprises 30 musicians, while the Bosconian Youth Choir has 23 singers, all members of the Don Bosco Parish.  There is even an additional group made up of 13 Primary school children (aged 6-12) who play the melodica/pianica and recorder.
The post-novitiate community also contributed to the concert, including Fr Peter Tukan, Rector, on saxophone and Fr Herybertus Agung, Vice Rector, on trumpet. One of the post-novices joined the violinists for the evening. The concert promoted the Bosconian Mini Orchestra which was organised just one and a half years ago.
The entire orchestra is notable for its youthfulness - average age just 19 years old. Its director and composer, Miss Nathania Karina is only 23. Amongst the 60 or so parishes in the Archdiocese of Jakarta, Don Bosco Parish is the only one with a youth orchestra. Mrs Sovia Tjua and Deacon Onny Bonifacius sdb are advisors to the youth group.

Just as a concluding note to this news, from elsewhere in the world but broadly connected. Next time you go to www.sdb.org take a look at the 'Concerto' link in the left hand column. Once you enter the 'Concerto' site you can use the Google translator if you don't read Italian. The translation is a bit laughable but you get the message at least! Piazza Vittorio Veneto is reputedly the largest Square in Europe. The Don Bosco Foundation hopes to raise thousands of Euro for Salesian work amongst streetkids in Haiti.  Another evening of beautiful music for a beautiful cause!
