Korean and Filipino youth together in Victorias, Southern Philippines

VICTORIAS: 14th August 2006 -- Close to 39 young people and 3 Salesians from South Korea rocked the quiet but youthful community surrounded by sugar cane in the central part of the Philippines, Don Bosco Technical Institute-Victorias (DBTI). They arrived in the province last week and are currently staying at the retreat house in Don Bosco-Mambucal to do some volunteer work, helping the community of the St. John Bosco Parish, Mambucal in the Province of Negros Occidental.
However, August 8, 2006, on the day 3 of novena to our Lady Assumed into Heaven, the Koreans went down to visit the first Salesian presence in the Philippines which is also situated on the same Island. Upon their arrival, they were greeted by the Rector of the community, Fr. Norman Broderick Segovia, together with some of the Salesians and were treated with a sumptuous lunch prepared by Bro. Manny Gacayan. After the meal the visitors toured around the place, visiting the other Salesian communities in the area, namely the community of St Joseph the Worker parish (which is famous for its painting “the angry Christ”) and the Salesian sisters of St. Mary Mazzarello School.
A heavy pour down of rain at around 3:00 p.m. did not stop the friendly football match of the Koreans headed by Fr. Dominic and the high school varsity players of DBTI looked after by Br. Alipino Antonio Añano Jr, SDB. The other young people of Korea however, did not just enjoy watching the game but also enjoyed the greetings of warm and friendly welcome by the students of DBTI. Surely this experience of both the young people of Korea and DBTI has imprinted in their hearts a wonderful experience of family atmosphere and camaraderie in St. John Bosco.
