Poland awards two of its own in Japan

TOKYO: 4th December 2008 -- The Polish Government, taking advantage of a visit to Japan by the President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, for the 90th anniversary of the opening of diplomatic relations between the two nations, has awarded the 'Order of Poland's Rennaissance' to two Polish Salesian missionaries in Japan, Frs Nikodem Pisarksi and Mikalaj Moskwa. The medal award event took place on 3rd December in Tokyo, at the New Otani Hotel.
Fr Pisarksi, born 1915, and Fr Moskwa, born 1918, both arrived in Japan in 1937 as young Salesians. Fr Pisarski, a musician and Latin teacher, was also Novice Director at one stage. Fr Moskwa has worked as bursar, school principal, parish priest and also a translator, due to his excellent command of Japanese.
Poland has at least five Salesian missionaries in Japan, and several other missionaries elsewhere in the EAO region, from as far north as Mongolia to as far east as Samoa.
