JAPAN: EAO SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS MEETING UNDERWAY

CHOFU (Tokyo) 4th February '04  --  The East Asia-Oceania (EAO) Region have begun their Social Communications Meeting with Fr. Tarcisio Scaramussa, General Councillor for Social Communications, and Fr. Vaclav Klement, Regional Superior.  Present also to facilitate and guide the participating confreres are Fr. Peter Gonsalves and Fr. Renato Butera.  Participants are the Provincials and Delegates of Social Communication for the Region -- Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines-North and Philippines-South, Indonesia-Timor and Australia.  The Delegate of Papua New Guinea, Fr. Valeriano Barbero, and the representative from Solomon Islands, Fr. Ambrose Pereira, are also present.

Confreres started filling the rooms of the Salesian Seminary in Chofu from the morning up to the evening of the 2nd.  The three-day affair opened yesterday morning 3rd February
with the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist with Fr. Klement as celebrant and homilist.   Fr. Orlando Puppo, Provincial of Japan, read the gospel of the raising of Jairus' duaghter and the healing of the woman with a haemorrhage, "The gospel for today is very much relevant to our gathering," said Fr. Klement in his homily, "because the most important thing is that we touch Jesus in order to fulfill our mission in the field of social communication."

The morning sessions were devoted to the sharing of each participating Province as regards their apostolate in the field of social communications, their aims, plans and projects and difficulties.  In the afternoon, Fr. Peter Gonsalves and Fr. Renato Buttera oriented the participants on the ways and means to maximize the website of the Salesian Congregation (
www.sdb.org) and of its ANS news website. Their orientation led to the realization of how rich and convenient the websites are and paved the way to motivate each Province to contribute news, information and materials to the whole Salesian world.

Later in the afternoon, Fr. Scaramussa opened up a study process on the document at hand. The day ended with an Italian version of the 30-minute video on Venerable Cimatti
