A bridge between Europe and China

ZHEJIANG, TRENT: 31 May 2010 -- Amongst the books that have come across the desk recently, one title reads Media education Sans Frontiers, published both by Zhejiang University Press, China, and Edizioni Centro Studi Erickson, Trent, Italy. The Editors are Xiaozhou Xu, Gianna Cappello and Carlo Socol.  One of those will be certainly known to our readers.
The book, subtitled 'Common challenges, shared solutions for China and Italy', results from a China-Italy Symposium on Youth Learning and the Media hosted by the College of education, Zhejiang University, the Culture Office of the Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai amongst other bodies. The event took place in March 2008.
In their concluding comment on the symposium, also added as a final comment on the collection of papers which make up the book, Gianni Cappello and Carlo Socol concluded that despite obvious differences and even very different expectations from the Chinese and Italian participants, "we felt that a sense of unity was growing, that new spaces for future common action and reflection were opening up ahead of us".
Much of the agenda on questions of Media Education has already been set by the Italian side, which has a developed expertise in the field. But the two commentators saw that Media Education developed in China would have a distinctive Chinese feel to it and that the real question underlying its purpose and its potential in any setting is that of how one builds a modern society without first or concomitantly building mature and responsible citizens. "Media education could be a way, if not the answer...".
The symposium has resulted in proposal of joint research projects, mostly comparative studies and the possibility of a teacher formation project.
