SYM Camp, DBTI Port Moresby
by Ms. Lavaina Tira
PORT MORESBY 21 August 2012 --  The Salesian Youth Movement Camp 2012 at Don Bosco Technological Institute  in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea  saw the students taking part in many varied youthful activities like fun games and having fellowship with fellow Bosconians.

The camp took place on the 3rd and 4th of August 2012 with the theme: Bosco Kala Trupla Pasin (pidgin for Bosco ways are true ways). It became the ice-breaker opportunity for many of the freshmen students who made use of the event outside school hours to get to know their seniors and make new friends. The highlight of the camp was the Eucharistic celebration in the evening in the school’s basketball court with coloured  variations like the cultural dances from different cultures in the country organized by the students themselves. The SYM Camp 2012 was a means to know more about Don Bosco through games, Trivia, and formation sessions. The ten teams of 380 student participants were given their names according to the places of Don Bosco like Chieri, Valdocco, Rome, Turin, etc.

It was a fun-filled weekend with one of the highlights being the celebration of the Rector, Fr. Louie Catañeda’s  56th birthday celebration. He was given cultural ornaments from the different  provinces of PNG and was dressed up as a paramount Chief for the evening, a concrete gesture  of the DBTI student leaders for their gratitude to him as father to the boarding and day students and leader of the institution.

On the Saturday, a former instructor and registrar, Mr. Ramon Garay gave a talk on Salesian Youth Spirituality. Some of the topics he covered were story and milestones of his life as a Bosconian himself  and the ways and values that will make any Bosconian survive in the workplace while keeping the Bosconian Identity.

The aim of the camp was to form the young people to find meaning in their lives and to promote Bosconian ideals while at school and when they are employed and to have  fellowship and fun in group-building activities and deepen the students’ knowledge about the life of Don Bosco.

The camp ended with the awarding of the best group, the ROME Team which  garnered the highest number of points in all the competitions and games. The  best male and best female SYM campers were chosen by the judges for their quality of participation and  discipline during the entire camp: Ms. Donna Giang and Salesian aspirant Mr. Pio  Ehava, both second year students of 2nd Yr.  Electronics Technology class.
