Colourful start to DBTI Rector's Cup

HENDERSON (SI) 24 April 2012
-- The annual Don Bosco Technical Institute Rector’s Cup Competition got off to a colourful start on 19th April, as the students presented their class mascots, war cries, banners and dances to an excited crowd of parents and guests who had assembled to celebrate the Opening Ceremony.

The Rector’s Cup is an annual challenge at DBTI. It involves regular sporting matches between each of the classes throughout the whole year. The aim of this competition is to promote and encourage healthy lifestyles and good sportsmanship, but also to help the young students of the Institute to engage in competition and social interaction in a positive way.

The key component of the Opening Ceremony is the Class Challenge. In this challenge, students present mascots, banners, war cries and dances they have developed and made together. Each item is judged based on a number of criteria which place emphasis on teamwork and on excellence. All of the teams rose to the challenge this year, presenting a colourful and enthusiastic display of team spirit that encompassed their current learning and their traditions. There was a huge variety in the work presented to the judges, with Hip Hop and Break Dancing sharing the floor with traditional dances of Malaita and Guadalcanal. The mascots and banners each represented hours of work and thorough planning and polishing, and the war cries showed that these well-behaved students know how to let down their hair when they want to!

The occasion also allowed for a strengthening of relationships between DBTI and its supporters. Invited guests included parents and members of the School Board, as well as community members and some very special guests from ANZ management. Ms Nancy Kame, ANZ Consumer Lending Manager presented the school with some ANZ bags and water bottles to be used in the games and in the school. She also addressed the students on the importance of participation and team work, encouraging them to come to ANZ to help deal with their needs and to look there for employment opportunities in the future. DBTI principal, Camari Bainivalu, also spoke to the students about the benefits they can get from such opportunities as the Rector’s Cup programme.

The Team Challenge results were announced by Sr. Secilia Sala fma who commended the students for their enthusiasm and recognised the hard work put in by everyone. The winners on the day were the Senior Carpentry class with their “safety first” message and their enthusiastic traditional dance – they had even built a miniature house on wheels as their mascot – but all the students involved are to be commended for their dedication.
