"Change starts with you"!
by Fr. Ambrose Pereira sdb

HENDERSON (SI): 31 July 2011 -- “We are the product of a system created by our forefathers, but the ‘human’ quality can bring change to the system”, said Ms Mele O’Brian, from the Chamber of Commerce at her presentation at Don Bosco Technical Institute, Henderson.
Over 300 parents, students and teachers attended the Parent-Teacher-Student Interaction, entitled ‘Ethics and Attitudes in Industry’.  The Extracurricular activity organised for the benefit of the students was held on 30th July, at 9am at the Don Bosco school hall, Henderson.
Presenter Ms. O’Brian, emphasised the need for people to develop correct values, ethics and principles in their lives, as she dwelt on ‘Identifying the real needs of society’.  “More important than skill and qualification, is character and conscience, discernment and discipline”, she stated. She thanked the parents who put in a lot of effort and energy to educate their children.  She challenged the students to be determined to take up the ownership of the country through the many personal choices that affect their future.  She concluded her very clear presentation with the statement, “Change starts with you!”
Mr. William Barile, General Manager, Solomon Islands Ports Authority and School Board member challenged parents to bring up their children by their example.  While praising the competency of a person,  he stressed the need to be creative in each ones profession.
Mr Bernard Rapasia, TVET coordinator and Sr Sialei Puapuaga fma, were appreciative of the presentation and encouraged the students to put them into practice.
Ms Camari Bainivalu, principal, then addressed the parents on the achievements of the past semester and the programmes ahead.  The parents then had the opportunity to meet the class advisors to discuss the progress of their children.
The students are now eagerly preparing for a fund raising activity on 20th August at which their will stage Lawrence Waddy’s, The Prodigal Son.  Parents, guardians, friends and well-wishers are all welcome to support the Institute as it looks at new and creative possibilities to harness the zeal and the talent of the young.
