Friends of Don Bosco (FDB) come into being at Visitation Chapel in Tung Chung

Hong Kong: 7 October 2010:  We find increasing reference, at least as part of the 'vast movement' today in Salesian terms, to the 'Friends of Don Bosco'. This is an unofficial grouping intended to cover those who sympathise with and act according to Salesian principles in close cooperation with Salesians, but who are not part of an official Salesian Family group.

Recently, in HK, Fr Osvaldo Metz, the parish priest of Visitation Chapel in Tung Chung near HK International Airport, announced the inauguration of “Friends of Don Bosco at Visitation Chapel” and presided over the setting up of the first leadership council himself.  The council consists of 5 members – a Coordinator, Administrator, Secretary, Programmer, and Advisor who has to be a Salesian Cooperator.
As patron for the FDB, the Salesian Cooperators, China Province, offer financial as well as spiritual support.  There were some 50 members who came to witness the historical moment. They also brought home-made food to share with the parishioners after the Mass!
Meanwhile, the movie “Mission to Love” was projected. Fr Simon Lam, Salesian Provincial, came personally to elaborate on how Don Bosco loved the young and dedicated his life to save them.
The newly formed FDB in Tung Chung, it needs to be explained, is in fact a youth group now aiming to serve the young in the Tung Chung area, with particular concern for those coming from families of ethnic minorities. Youngsters aged 12 to 25, Catholics and non-Catholics alike (which is one of the advantages of any FDB structure) are welcome to join, on one condition: that they want to be friends of Don Bosco and want to share his love and joy with others.
