Mission animation in EAO hits high spot due to energetic Cooperator couple

GREECE: 24th March 2009 -- Writing from Greece, where they have returned after a nearly 4 month stint in ITM, Rula and Gianni, we'll call them (their real names) are expressing continued enthusiasm for the 'mission of salvation of the young' as they say, believe and act.  Rula and Gianni have been outstanding professional people in their fields, active Salesian Cooperators, and are now planning to locate to Sicily where they will help with missionary animation in that Province under the guidance of Fr Gianni Mazzali, provincial.  It is not too often that we hear of an active Salesian unit operating out of Greece!
The three and a half months spent in ITM, in both Indonesia and East Timor, gave Rula and Gianni the opportunity of meeting with and witnessing to the Salesian Cooperators, Aspirant Cooperators, ADMA, Brothers SDB and students in Jakarta, Dili, Venilale, Fatumaca, Baucau and Fuiloro within the framework of formation of Salesian Cooperators around the world.
Teaching basic English (yes, they are strong in English as well as Greek, Italian and, one imagines soon, Sicilian!) to the boys at the Seminario at Venilale, applied English for Hotel and Catering Industry purposes to the girls in Venilale, and English lectures to students at Fatumaca, kept the couple busy for 25 hours a week during their Timor stint. To this they added coaching students in football at Venilale and Fatumaca, treating and looking after 125 boys at the Seminario and 120 girls from the orphanage in Venilale, and helping local poor people with food distribution and sustainable aid.
The couple have also made material contribution to the orphanages in Venilale and Los Palos, the Technical Schools in Venilale and Fatumaca, as a way of helping some very poor students to be able to continue their studies.
All in all very much a powerhouse of Salesian lay activity, one must admit!
