FIN has new provincial

MANILA: 14th June 2008 -- It did not take long for the news to begin to spread in the mobile phone era, and besides, expectation was rife since the election of Fr Andrew Wong as EAO Regional at GC26! The Manila-based Philippines North province (FIN) has a new provincial in the person of Fr Eligio (known more simply as Eli) Cruz.
    Fr Eli Cruz is a Filipino through and through, born in Bacalod City in 1960. He completed all his studies and various Salesian and priestly formation stages in the Philippines. Ordained priest in 1990, it was not long before he found himself a member of the local community council and then Rector. He started out after ordination at Mandaluyong, then returned there as Rector in 2002, after a brief period as Rector in Quezon City.  He has remained as Rector at Mandaluyong since 2002.
    Amongst his many qualities, Fr Eli has shown a considerable degree of vision and leadership in guiding Don Bosco Technical College and community, a work that combines many things besides technical education - it is also a parish, youth centre and offers various chaplaincies.  He is also a member of the Social Communications team for the Province and is noted for his communication interest and capability.
    Interestingly enough, Mandaluyong has been a cradle of provincials and bishops - both Bishop Panfilo and Bishop Capelli were Rector there in their time.
