HK's Fr Hon Tai-Fai outlines his approach at Asian Mission Congress

HONG KONG: 19th October 2006 -- Fr Savio Hon Tai-Fai, recently stepped down from his role as SDB Provincial in Hong Kong, has outlined his contribution to the Asian Mission Congress now underway at Chiang Mai, Thailand.  Fr Savio indicates that he will be speaking on the Story of Jesus in Religions in Asia (one of the Conference sub-themes) by relating how the story of Jesus relates to stories of other religions, and the importance of proclaiming Jesus' story in inter-religious dialogue.
Fr Savio is one of 19 official delegates from the Diocese at the Conference, which include both Cardinal Zen and his Auxiliary Bishop John Tong Hon.  He comes not only with his experience as a leader in Salesian circles, but that too of his membership of the International Theological Commission (he has recently returned from a meeting of this body in Rome) and the FABC, the Asian Bishops Conference Federation's office of Theological Concerns.
Along with other HK delegates, Fr Savio has reflected on the difficulties of evangelisation in the context of life in his prosperous city, where the spiritual life is a value that is often subservient to other values, such as productivity.  He notes that "society is motivated by (material) benefits and neglects spiritual needs".  The Hong Kong Diocese has recently conducted a two year campaign aimed at evangelisation within the territory, a campaign which has resulted in an increased number of catechumens. Currently the Diocese counts around 350,000 Catholics, of whom some 40% are Filipino domestic help immigrants.
