FIN SC Commission Convenes Meeting of Local Coordinators


Diwang Buskô-MAKATI: 5 July 2005 -- As the School Year comes into full-swing in the Philippines, the Social Communications Commission, headed by Philippines North (FIN) delegate Fr. Armand Robleza convened newly-appointed local Social Communications coordinators in their first quarterly meeting at the Provincial House Offices. With this meeting, the commission formally launches its service of directly animating all Salesian communities through the local coordinators who are tasked to ensure the promotion and functioning of the local end of Salesian Communication.
    Fr. Armand presented the different stages that the commission has gone through from its activation in the Province's Organic Plan in mid-2003 to the present. The Organic Plan calls for:
1. Integration of media edcation into the scholastic and formative programs off all settings;
2. Serious study of the SDB publishing and printing apostolate in view of greater synergy and effectiveness;
3. Establishing regular SDB contributor presence in leading secular print media;and,
4. Identification and support of confreres and lay partners gifted in media communications.
    The commission also reported other significant steps which were taken in the past three years:
1. Initial meeting of editors of school and parish papers who have agreed to meet quarterly and to establish networking relationships.
2. Establishment of the Salesian Editorial Board consisting of representaives from the members of the Salesian Family.
3. Initiation of group reflections on the Province's social agenda together with parent, parish and past pupil representatives.
4. Launching of CodeRED, a quarterly magazine on servant-leadership values and on the family presented as companion publication with the Salesian Bulletin. Competative in the commercial market, CodeRED now subsidizes the production of the Salesian Bulletin.
5. Transformation of the Salesian Bulletin from a voice about the Salesian Family to Voice of the Family.
6. Creation of the Salesian Media Board which aims to synergize the two existing publishers and the printing press of the province.
    After the comprehensive report by the delegate, the new coordinators raised clarifications about the report and their roles; and expressed their expectations. At the end of the meeting, the local coordinators received their copies of the newly released Salesian Social Communications System Guidelines from Rome for personal study and for future commission meeting discussions.
