From Chennai to Suva

SUVA (Fiji Islands): 22nd October 2005 -- The first day of the annual Provincial Visitation to Don Bosco House in Suva coincided with the arrival of Fr. Bellarmine Fernando SDB.  In the context of a traditional Samoan welcoming ceremony, Fr. Ian Murdoch (Provincial) officially introduced Fr. Bellarmine to the Salesian Community. Fr Ian also expressed the heartfelt gratitude of the whole Province of Mary Help of Christians to Fr Bellarmine for volunteering his life and service to this Pacifican Community of Salesians.
Fr. Bellarmine has come to Suva to assume the role of Rector of Don Bosco House, which educates and forms younger Salesians who are in various stages of their formation to the priesthood and religious life. He will take over the role of Rector next year, a role held by Fr. Petelo Vito Pau since 2003. He will also be teaching Church History at the Pacific Regional Seminary in Suva. Fr. Bellarmine is very well suited to this task, having spent most of his priestly life as a Professor of Church History in Seminaries, and he has has considerable experience as a Rector of Studentates and Seminaries. Most recently, Fr. Bellarmine was the provincial of the Chennai Salesian Province in South India for six years.
Fr. Bellarmine studied Theology in England and completed a Masters Degree in Church History at London University. He was ordained in 1984.  The Don Bosco House Community looks forward to benefiting from the experience and leadership of Fr. Bellarmine, as he seeks to guide the formation of future Salesian priests and brothers.
