FMA: First Private Elementary School in Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH: 28th June 2005 -- It was 8.20 a.m. June 17, when villagers around Don Bosco District were in a spirit of celebration. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians were inaugurating the first private elementary school run by a Religious Congregation in Cambodia at Phum Chreh Village in Phnom Penh .
Attended by H. E. Em Sethy, the Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Youth and sports, H.E. Mann Chhuen, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, H.E. Khleang Huot, District officer of Russey Keo, benefactors from Italy and Japan, friends and parents of the students, the official opening happened amidst cheers and hopes that this school will provide quality education to many children of the area in line with the FMA’s vision of “a peaceful and developed Cambodia where poor youth receive quality education”.  When Salesian educators look at these children, they cannot but hope for a better future for them through education.

The keynote speech of H.E. Em Sethy underlined the importance of the Don Bosco Foundation in the field of education particularly the skills training by its technical and vocational centres where the young are empowered to find their rightful place in society, earn a decent means of livelihood and be productive, honest and active citizens. It was a public speech honoring the role of Don Bosco on the theme “Don Bosco effective partner in the human development of Cambodia".
