Formation Rectors of Formation Houses EAO

BANGKOK: 3rd January 2008 -- The last in a series (for the current six year period only*) of formation seminars in the East Asia-Oceania Region (EAO) is currently taking place at the Provincial House in Bangkok from 2-6 January.  it is a relatively small but lively group of Rectors of formation Houses from across the region, 21 in all with 4 facilitators including Fr Francis Gustilo of the EAO Mobile Team and and Michael McGuire an Irish Columban with 20 years of formation experience who is based in Manila at the Ongoing Formation Centre for training priests and religious, located in Manila.
The seminar has selected 'personalisation of formation' as its theme, resulting from a brief survey of EAO Rectors Formation carried out at Hua Hin last August.  Rectors of formation houses in particular have asked for help with topics such as: evaluation of those in formation, individual spiritual direction, deepening Salesian spirituality, and fostering the human maturity of young Salesians.
Day One of the seminar began with a Mass at which Fr Theparat, Thai Provincial, presided. He spoke to participants of formation as 'a thing of the heart', reminding them that God alone is  Lord of the human heart. Participants discussed their expectation of formation, and were encouraged by the chief facilitator (McGuire) to interact with one another across the region. It is expected that there will be input on religious life in general - cultural background, psychology, formation experience, and on the various views of Church around the world.
When materials being presented at this seminar become available they will immediately be placed on the revamped Bosconet-wiki (keep an eye on the 'Formation' group). One item 'advertised' by Fr Klement as a useful tool is already available on Bosconet - St Francis de Sale's 'Introduction to the Devout Life'.
The dynamics of the workshop involve four work sessions per day with small group interaction after each of Fr Mcguire's input sessions.

*Other formation decisions concerning this series include: 08/2006: formation delegates decide to start with annual formation of formators; 01/2007: Workshop in Sampran led by Fr Aldo Giraudo - some Salesian Family members also present; 01/2007: EAO provincials decide on 2008 as the moment for formation of rectors of formation houses (the current seminar); 08/2007: survey to find agreement on suitable topic.
