Province day in Callisto Caravario Province ITM

BAUCAU: 2nd January 2007 -- Information has recently come in concerning the ITM-East Timor Province Day held this year in Baucau.  Because of distances, ITM has now adopted the practice of holding two Province Days - one in Indonesia and one in East Timor.  The East Timor (Timor Leste) event took place on 27th December 2007.
Fr Calleja, provincial, used the opportunity to speak of two major authoritative indications: from the Rector Major on the one hand (the Strenna for 2008) and the Pope (his most recent encyclical on hope).  He spoke of signs of hope in working for the poor amongst young people in East Timor, creating hope in this new nation.  He also spoke of the importance of work and sacrifice, prayer and joy.
The Province Day celebration also drew attention to some of the wonderful pioneers of Salesian work in the country: Bro Jose Ribeiro arrived in East Timor from Portugal in 1946! In 2006 he celebrated his 60th anniversary of arrival.  Fr Joao de Deus Pires, also from Portugal originally, will celebrate 50 years in East Timor on 4th January 2008. Not far behind is Fr Eligio Locatelli from Italy, already 43 years in the country, and Deacon Pires Balthasar.  Recalling some of those who had died as well, names such as Fr Nacher, Fr de Preto, Bro Gamba and Bro Kuisy, Fr Calleja reminded those present that the presence of older confreres strengthens the vocation of the others. And it gives them joy when they see so many young confreres, as is the case for ITM.
Our correspondent indicates that counting not only the Salesians but others present for the Province Day celebrations there were some 200 people involved. They never do things in half measures in ITM!
