TIMOR: NEWS CONCERNING SPECIFIC CONFRERES

Julian Fox

In the past hour I have received two pieces of news via Salesian confreres

and family members of confreres from the Indonesia-Timor Province. It has

been difficult to verify the safety of individual confreres who remained in

East Timor (those east of Dili) other than the general notices that have

come through from people like Fr. Locatelli and the Salesian Sisters

assuring us that all are o.k. But because a number of Salesians and family

members have been directly in touch with me and have not always had these

same assurances, I can now confirm that the following confreres are 'back

home' and in fine form (meaning back in their communities or at least in the

vicinity thereof):

Fr. Padilla

Fr. Palomo

Fr. Jose Vattaparampil

I also have firm assurances that all other confreres are o.k.

Fr. Wong (Provincial)left Jakarta today to return to Dili. Fr. Rolando and

others are hoping (from Kupang) to be not too far behind him in returning to

Dili.

There has been a false report from the Jesuit Refugee Service International

concerning a certain Bro. Valencio, Salesian, supposedly killed along with

the Canossian Sisters last Saturday. We have no-one by that name. I am

unaware of the names of those (other than the Sisters) who were killed, so

it could be that this is where the name comes from.
