Sisters of Charity of Jesus: professions

TOKYO: 9th December
-- The recently renamed 'Sisters of Charity of Jesus' (formerly Caritas Sisters of Miyazaki often reduced to 'Caritas', which title will still apply) celebrated a grand feast on 8th December which also became a significant moment for the Salesian Family in Japan to celebrate the 150th of the Salesian Congregation.
Two Sisters made their first profession while a further three made their final profession.  Presiding at the occasion, at the Sisters' Central House in Japan, was the Archbishop of Tokyo, Peter Okada, accompanied by the Salesian Provincial Fr Aldo Cipriani and a large number of priests and religious amongst which Salesians and diocesan clergy, especially from the parishes of the Sisters who were making their profession.
The Sisters of Charity of Jesus have recently concluded their 13th General Chapter (7th November). It was at this Chapter, part of which was attended by Fr Adrian Bregolin, Vicar of the Rector Major, that they formally adopted the new title.  They began their existence in Miyazaki, the site of the first Salesian mission in Japan, in 1937, and their title of Sisters of Charity was specified by that place. They have spread widely since and are now found in Korea, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Australia and in Europe. They number some 1,1000 Sisters.  Their much broader apostolate convinced them of the need to omit the 'Miyazaki' reference and identify more clearly the true source of their 'charity'.
The Provincial, in his greetings to them on the occasion, expressed this double reality very nicely.  He urged them not to ever forget the place of their origins, Miyazaki. But he also expressed the hope that they will continue to spread now to every continent in the world to spread the charity that comes from the heart of Jesus and which is expressed in a Salesian way.
