VIDES Japan opens Bosco Bakery School in Siem Reap Cambodia

SIEM REAP: 24th November 2007 -- Siem Reap, 314 kms from Phnom Penh, is the gateway to the famous Angkor Wat ('Angkor' literally means 'capital city' or 'holy city' and refers to the capital city of the Khmer Empire, ancient Cambodia from 9th to 12th century).
    Saturday 24 November was a red-letter day for VIDES Japan.  The Bosco Bakery School opened at Siem Reap. Like the humble Bethlehem where the 'house of bread' exists, so Por Kroam Village in Siem Reap is, likewise, a humble village.  The dirt road to BBS Siem Reap leads to nowhere except rice paddies, plantations of bananas, coconuts, jackfruit and papayas - and impoverished dwellings.  Yet, very soon, out-of-school youth and villagers generally will learn baking skills to prepare them for worthwhile jobs.
    Saturday 24 November 2007 was no ordinary day for the villagers. Mr. Tap Poun Chhay, district officer of Siem Reap and Mr Yokota, representative for VIDES International, Japan, made the day an extraordinary one.  Both came to honour the youth and the village through the official opening of Bosco Bakery School.  The school is the brainchild of Sr Inagawa Paolo FMA and a group of Japanese VIDES supporters who flew from Japan to join the opening ceremony.  Fr Leo Ochoa SDB, presided over the Eucharist and the blessing of the new school building.
    The purchase of the land, construction of the 2-storey building, provision of modern baking equipment, preparation of personnel and presence of volunteer instructors are all gifts of the Japanese people to the Cambodian people.  Mr Tap Poun Chhay thanked the donors and guests for supporting the  government-sustainable development policy through vocational and skills training centres.

VIDES: an acronym for Volontariato Internazionale Donna Educazione Sviluppo, in Italian, or International Volunteer Agency for Women, Education, Development, an NGO run by the Salesian Sisters worldwide.  Its brother organisation is VIS. Both have headquarters in Italy.
