Japan province fetes jubilarians and holds assembly

TOKYO: 17th June 2006 -- Japan Province today held its Province Day and a general assembly of confreres from the Province, in Tokyo.  But the event was preceded by two days of intense work involving Rectors and Provincial Councillors, looking at a revision of the local manual for Rectors and planning for the coming years.  The planning was focused on the rediscovery of Don Bosco and studying how best to make him alive and present to today's youth in Japan.
Today, after a short presentation from the Provincial, the confreres broke up into four groups to study evangelisation approaches for the different settings where Salesians are working today in Japan - schools, parishes, social works and youth centres.  Central to the day was the celebration of the Eucharist.
The day also had a missionary element to it: firstly the screening of the short film on Sudan, the focus of this year's Salesian mission project, then a missioning ceremony for Fr Michael Lap who is going to spend the next five years working in the Solomon Islands.  Present too was the group of university level aspirants including five from Vietnam.  They provided some entertainment by way of dances and songs.
Thirteen members of the province were feted for jubilees, though not all were able to be present.  Deserving of particular mention are Fr Clodoveo Tassinari, celebrating his 70th anniversary of priesthood and who was the first provincial to follow on from Don Cimatti, Fr Nikodem Pisarski who celebrated his Golden Jubileee of priesthood ten years ago with John Paul II in Rome!  Three others were celebrating their Golden Jubilee of ordination this year: Fr Paul Faroni, Fr Joseph Di Prinzio and Fr John Massa.
