Amidst the ordinations - a Colourful Brother's Silver Jubilee

CEBU CITY: 14th December 2007 -- This is a time for priestly ordinations in many parts of our region - there is another tomorrow, Deacon Falaniko Felise or 'Falani' of Australia-Pacific, and particularly of Samoa, will be ordained.  But today's news item is about the Silver Jubilee of a Brother in the Region, an equally important event.
On December 8 this year, the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Salesian Family of Philippines South (FIS) honoured Bro. Carlomagno P. Bacalla as he celebrated 25 years of profession as a Salesian, in a solemn ceremony held at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, Punta Princesa, Cebu City.
Three of Bro. Carlo's companions joined the celebration: Fr Eugene Maglasang, Fr Alan Banogon and Fr Patrick Villasanta.  Also part of the throng of 600 well-wishers were members of the Salesian Family, Benefactors and Brothers from different Congregations in the South.
During the Mass, the Provincial, Fr Arturo Sanchez Jr, poignantly recalled: "We do not have many celebrations of this type because we do not have too many Brothers.  But we hope to have more in the coming years if we foster this unique vocation and encourage more young people by presenting clear models for them to emulate".
Bro Carlo has lived, thus far, a colourful and attractive life as a Salesian Brother.  He has been inspiring youth with his enthusiasm and athleticism marked by his several participations in triathlon events.  He has been a workshop director in most of his assignments even in his missionary work in Nigeria for 13 years (He gave great joy to a Nigerian Sister recently, on a visit to Rome, when he addressed her in her own language).  Currently he is Training Director for Don Bosco Pasil and Delegate for the province's Salesian Lay Volunteer Organisation.  Bro Carlo is also vice president of the Visayas Association of Religious Brothers (VARB).
