Manila - Salesians appeal for help

MANILA: 28th September 2009 --
While detailed information regarding the effect of Typhoon Ondoy on Salesian work is scarce at the moment, we have received several communiques which at least put the situation within the broader perspective available from TV and other news outlets
The Salesian Youth Ministry Commission has made an appeal within the Philippines to anyone who can help, adding that "we, our lay partners and students were not spared from the damage done by the typhoon to our persons and our properties".  What that damage is, however, has not currently been specified.
At this stage the Commission is asking people to inform it of needs that are evident in each Salesian setting, and, where possible, what that setting might be able to do to also help others less fortunate than themselves. The communique indicates that they are networking with other Church and Government agencies.
A separate communique asks that "the Congregation keep us in your prayers and we welcome whatever help you can provide".
One of the Filipino news outlets provides a Google map of severely affected parts of Manila and its immediate surrounds (though the disaster has seriously impacted on many other parts of Luzon).  The map suggests that the area to the east of the city, around Pasig City, is the worst affected.  Makati and Mandaluyong appear to be freer of flood waters. Likewise, Parañaque appears to be less affected.
