HONG KONG: 10 November 2011 -- Sr. Mabel Chan, General Superior of the Sisters Announcers of the Lord (SAL) was elected new President of the Association of Major Superiors of the Women's Institutes of Hong Kong, during the last annual Assembly held in the presence of Mgr. Pierre Lam Minh, MEP, General Vicar of the diocese. According to reports from the Kong Ko Bao (Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), the assembly also elected two vice-presidents, the treasurer and secretary, who will work with Sister Chan at the helm of the Association in the 2011-2013 period. During the annual Assembly, Mons.Lam encouraged and invited the Sisters of Hong Kong to play an active role in the life of the Church.
The Sisters Announcers of the Lord, members of the Salesian Family since 2005, were founded in continental China in 1931 (though the date 1936 is also indicated in their literature) and in Hong Kong in 1953. They were founded by Bishop Ignatius Canazei and take St Louis Versiglia also as their inspiration.
The Association of Major Superiors of Women's Institutes in Hong Kong is part of the Major Superiors Union of Women's Institutes, established by the Holy See in 1972. In Hong Kong all the institutes Major Superiors in the area belong to the Association, except the congregations of contemplative life. The purpose of the Association is to strengthen the cooperation among the religious women, to promote the integral development of the individual institutions so that they can carry out a greater role according to its charisma, under the guidance of the Holy See and the Diocese as far as their Apostolate is concerned.
