Port Moresby, PNG, 2 September 2016 -- AS the academic year moves on, students at Don Bosco Technological Institute, Port Moresby are preparing themselves for what lies ahead.

The Third year Bachelor students at Don Bosco Technological Institute attended the Practice Teaching orientation on September 2, 2016 at the institute’s main library in preparation for the six-week practical training.

Fr. Louie Castañeda, SDB-Rector, Fr. Ariel Macatangay, SDB, Principal and the new Delegate for Formation of the Salesians and aspirants in PGS Vice-province, Mr. Simon Wapiyu, Practice Teaching Coordinator at the institute and Mr. Joseph Ake, Academic Head addressed the trainees in preparation for their practical training.

Fr. Rector encouraged them to teach their students keeping in mind Don Bosco’s educational system of reason, religion and rapport. “Let your students feel the love of God through the knowledge, skills and character that Don Bosco has formed in you. Educate them with accountability to their parents and interact with the coordinating schools by always carrying the good name of Don Bosco,” he said.

Fr. Ariel, SDB shared with them the DBTI’s Core Values and its application in Practice Teaching. Servant Leadership, Rapport and Loving Kindness, Life-long learning, Spirituality, Honesty, Respect and Solidarity were a few of the Core Values that he discussed. “Try to develop the habit of reflection at the end of each day and include it in your personal prayers,” said Fr. Ariel. On behalf of the Third Year students, Sr. Augusta Gaglu, BED-COT/ENG, congratulated Fr. Ariel on his new assignment and wished him the best in his new assignment. A deafening ‘Yes Clap’ for Fr. Ariel was done by the 3rd year students led by Tatu Akoi, BED-MVT/ENG.

Mr. Joseph Ake, Academic Head dealt on the importance of communication skills and the over-all bearing during the training. He emphasized that students should give due respect to all – staff, students and non-teaching staff. “Your smile can make a difference. You know how to plan your lessons, know that your presentation matters as well”, said the academic head.

The students were also reminded about the Practice Teaching guidelines by Mr. Wapiyu as he discussed ‘Bosconian behavior’. “Be prepared and fulfil all the requirements throughout the 6-week training and avoid any excuses,” the Coordinator concluded.
