Khmer Window on the World

SIHANOUKVILLE: 29 June 2011 -- The Don Bosco Foundation Cambodia Communication Department, based in Sihanoukville, is running a blog competition for past pupils of the Communications and IT Department. The idea has been developed and promoted by Fr Albeiro Rodas sdb, head of the Department. He has called it Khmer Window on the World.
With a slightly extended deadline (an original deadline of 24 June brought in a number of blogs, but the organisers are hoping for a wider selection), candidate bloggers have been given a wide range of categories which they may select from. They include: the currently running Khmer Rouge Tribunal (keeping memories so bad things do not come back), Women's Rights (building a country together), Child Safety (caring for the seeds of the future nation), Drug Prevention (for a healthy youth), Farmers' Guide (support for poor farmers and prevention of disasters), Teachers Board (support for basic teaching in Cambodia), Ecology (save the earth, save Cambodia), or other topic tagged with social activity or preventive action.
The plan is to announce the winners on July 1st at the Second Summit for Don Bosco Social Communication and Journalism Past Pupils Association to be held at the Don Bosco Tech School Campus, Sihanoukville.
Although you will not be able to make much of the Khmer script, and even less so unless your system is enabled for Asian languages, it may be worth a look at some of the entries. Fr Rodas has placed links to the candidates' entries in the school's Facebook page so visitors can vote on them, but those votes are more likely to come from locals who know something of the setting - and the language.  Here are some of the entries for your perusal:

Mr Vibot Ouktep. His blog is about astronomy. http://vibotxblog.blogspot.com/
Mr Tan Ly. His blog is about health campaigns. http://lights-side.blogspot.com/
Mr Sotun. His blog is about journalism. http://khmereduleader.blogspot.com/
Mr Tula Pov. His blog is about women's right. http://newsdonbosco.blogspot.com/
Mr Han Sory. His blog is about Poipet children. http://sorypoipet.blogspot.com/
Mr Ouch Sambo. His blog is about disaster prevention. http://cambodiadisaster.wordpress.com/
Mr Vibot Ouktep made with his mother, Sihanoukville artist Mrs Kountea. Although participants are normally allowed to present just one blog, organisers have accepted this as a special case for support to a Cambodian female artisit. http://www.kounteagallery.blogspot.com/
