Some e-book texts you will want to have

ROME: 2 March 2011 -- Firstly, apologies for a short break in service. Multitasking, even in this digital era, has its limits! There's only so much one can do at once. But with various people now away on Team Visits, the pressure has eased a little!

However, we have been up to something that might help people along the way! Any number of requests come in here for this or that other text - one of the favourites is "Can I please have the Mass text for Blessed so-and-so". As you are aware, despite many efforts, it seems that a reprint in English (and an update) is still in the making, and only the Almighty Himself knows when.  With that in mind, here is an 'unofficial' but useful solution. The Salesian Lectionary in English (which had already been largely put together, again on an unofficial basis, in the US) is now available in ebook format. This time, a number of changes have been integrated - changes of date (Zatti got moved from March to November, recall) or changes of text.  We have some texts officially approved in Latin (collects) but not in English. Where we have them I have included them in this 'lectionary' in Latin. People can then do as they wish with them.  It is all, of course, for private use only.

The epub section in English doesn't stop there. The Constitutions, the letters of the current Rector Major, the last four General Chapter texts, the recently revised SSCS text, Memoirs of the Oratory, two key texts for the Salesian Family (Identity, Mission), an interesting and academic address by Fr Fabio Attard on the recently beatified John Henry Newman ... and more items are in the making. including the Liturgy of the Hours for the Salesian Family.

Almost any 'hand held' device, including a number of mobile phones, are capable of reading epub format these days; it is the most widely used 'open' format in the game. Mind you, a mobile phone does not provide much reading 'fun' if the text goes beyond a few lines. A number of these texts have been prepared professionally (by us here, but using professional templates), so, for instance, the Lectionary text should appear on a decent-sized screen just as it would if you had a book in hand. If you want that experience, the easy way to get it is to use Firefox as your browser, and download the epub reader add-on. The alternative is the larger e-reader device, and there are many of these, from very cheap to very expensive.

Just one more important piece of information: you cannot access these texts unless you are a registered user of sdb.org. That you can do in 5 seconds flat from the sdb.org home page 'Register' button. If the above link does not work to the Lectionary, just go 'Resources' from the top tabs ont he home page then 'E-SDB' from the drop-down list.

Happy reading.
