China: Pilgrimage to Discover Origins

HONG KONG: 28th July 2009 -- A group of 34 pilgrims from the China Province of Mary Help of Christians has embarked on a tour to visit the places associated with Don Bosco so as to better know his background, the origins of his charism and the essence of his pedagogy.             They consist mainly of the Supervisors, Principals and Vice Principals of Salesian schools in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, and the group leader is none other than the Provincial himself, Fr. Simon Lam. The pilgrimage also covers Rome, the centre of Catholicism, so that participants can understand more the purpose and fundamental values of a Catholic education. In addition, it is intended to elevate the spirit of communion among group members.
The pilgrimage started out on 9 July and concludes on 1 August. The participants have journeyed through Rome, Florence, Turin and Milan, where they have abundantly experienced the cultural and religious heritage of these famous cities. The emphasis is, however, on the origins of our holy founder, the places where he grew up and developed his vocation, and the venues where he worked, together with a number of sites considered as ‘holy’ by the Salesian Family.
In Rome, the group intends to meet with the General Superiors, especially Fr. Andrew Wong, the Regional Superior of East Asia-Oceania. It has also planned to see and pay homage to the Holy Father during the course of its journey, though this is something of a challenge in the holiday period!
The pilgrimage is also organized to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Founding of our Salesian Society.
