Don Bosco Home remembers third Tsunami anniversary

BANKSAK PHANG NGA (Thailand): 2nd January 2008 -- On December 26, 2004 a tsunami devastated many costal settlements on the Western seaboard of Thailand. This colossal natural disaster claimed the lives of thousands of people, left scores of families homeless, and orphaned a countless number of children. Due to the severity of the calamity, the Salesians sent Fr. Suthep Chonthong, accompanied by members of Surathani Catholic Diocese Foundation, Saeng Thong Vithaya School and Rattanakosin Scout Association, to help six of the most effected communities in the region. After one year the above organizations set up many long term programs to help these people in need. There are three main groups co-operating in these programs. Phorntawan House” Surathani Catholic Diocese Foundation is responsible for the community development program, psychological/social programs and the livelihood program. San Camillo nursing Center, operated by the Camillian Congregation is responsible for all the healthcare related matters. Don Bosco Home in association with the Salesian Foundation by Fr. Theparat Pitisant look after the education and well being of the children.
Construction of the Don Bosco Home began in 2005 and on April 24 2006, the doors were opened to the needy children. At present there are thirty-eight girls and forty boys living under the care of Don Bosco Home. These seventy children are housed in four large dwellings. Each dwelling consists of two large bedrooms, a sitting room, dinning hall and bathrooms, there are also two full time custodians employed at each home. The homes were officially blessed November 15, 2007, by Bishop Joseph Prathan Sridarunsil, the blessing ceremony was attended by VIS and Jugend Dritte Welt contributors from Italy and Germany respectively.
While living at the Don Bosco Home the children live in a healthy and loving environment which ultimately helps in addressing each individual's psychological needs. The children also have weekly commitments that include housework, education, emotional and social development lessons,. The children attend regular school classes that meet their individual needs. There are also weekend activities organized by foreign and Thai volunteers.
Bishop Prathan visited the Home this Christmas and distributed gifts from Fr Provincial, Fr Theparat Pitisant sdb.

________________
The monthly operational costs at the Don Bosco Home are approximately 50 euro per child (600 euro per year). The Don Bosco Home is a non-profit organization and welcomes donations of any size to help off-set the operational expenses. If would like to donate to this very worthy cause it would be greatly appreciated and would have a profound effect on these young children’s future.
