Quetta volunteers lucky to survive bus mishap

LAHORE: 17th November 2005 --  The long bus trip from Quetta to Lahore, normally at least 18 hours, today ended in tragedy for some; fortunately the Salesian volunteers on that public bus survived with lesser injuries and shock and later reached their destination in Lahore where they will join the larger Don Bosco volunteer group heading for Muna Jafra in the mountains to set up a rehabilitation camp for earthquake survivors.
According to one member of the group from Quetta, the bus swerved to avoid a cyclist, skidded on the muddy road and overturned three times.  One person was killed and a number injured, some seriously.  The Salesian party included Fr Julio Palmieri, Principal of Don Bosco Learning Centre in Quetta, an Italian nurse, Salesian postulants and students from the Centre.  One of the group suffered a broken shoulder, the rest minor scratches and bruises.  Fr Julio was uninjured though in shock.  The group transferred to another bus and continued their journey to Lahore.
The group intends to join the main party of volunteers who are leaving for the mountains tomorrow.  We accompany them with a fervent wish for their safety into a zone that holds many unknowns, and an equally fervent prayer of gratitude to the Lord for bringing the Quetta group through their first leg nightmare ride.
