"More than I can be": 71 Graduates from DBTI
Regina Lepping, Media Course participant

HENDERSON: 28 October 2012
--  71 students at Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI) successfully graduated last week at Don Bosco, Henderson.  The graduates completed their courses in Automotive, Carpentry and Electrical Technology, Life skills, Maintenance, Fitting and Machining and a short three month course in welding.

The stage was set beautifully with the theme “More than I can be” neatly painted on the background. The ceremony began with a solemn thanksgiving Eucharistic celebration led by Archbishop Adrian Smith sm, Archbishop of Honiara.  In his homily, he congratulated the graduates on the skills that they had gained. He challenged them to acknowledge the presence of God in their Life. “You may have knowledge and skills, but go further and live a hundred percent of God’s plan for you.” He encouraged them to go out and be missionaries and share what they have learnt.

Mr. John Wate, Director TVET; Mr. Paul Woods, EU TVET programme; Ms Nancy Palmer, APTC coordinator; Mr. Cypriano Nuake, Director Catholic Education and Ms Maryann Keleimai were among the invited guests for the occasion.

Among the Graduates was Jacob Sunday who came from Makira three years ago to do Automotive Technology at DBTI; his family was not able to witness his graduation due to financial problems but he is thankful for their support. “I cherish every moment I had here in Don Bosco, it is my family also, with what I’ve learnt I want to get a job to help my family back home and to share my skills with others.”

Another excited graduate was Barbra Duzi from Savo, who was among the 7 girls who graduated in Life Skills. “I’m very happy to finally graduate, my family is also here with me” said the 22 year old.  “There are wonderful teachers here, I love the practical work, the environment and spiritual commitment that Don Bosco has offered us students,” she continued.  In future, Barbra said that she would like to develop and expand her knowledge on life skills and share it with others.

During the Graduation Ceremony, Fr. Ambrose Pereira sdb, Rector, acknowledged the efforts and the struggles of the students. “Your efforts are nothing compared to the joy of the harvest,” he said.  He thanked Fr. Raffy Galve sdb, PNG-SI Delegate, Fr. Pankaj Xalxo sdb, Administrator and Fr. Srimal Priyanga sdb, Spiritual Director who have made the young their life’s mission. He was most appreciative of the dedication and commitment of Ms Camari Bainivalu, principal, staff, volunteers, benefactors and the many who support and assist the school in developing and raising up the lives of the young people.

“Ensure that you are good Bosconians, putting into practice all that you have learnt”, encouraged Fr. Raffy Galve sdb, as he congratulated the Graduates on their achievement.  He thanked the parents and guardians for all the help and support they render them.
