Full Sail with the Wind of Grace: Peter Kibe and 187 Japanese Martyrs

NAGASAKI: 24th November 2008 -- 24th November 2008 is destined to become a grand occasion for Japan and especially the Catholic community: the beatification, in Nagasaki, of 188 martyrs from the 17th century.
It is pleasing to note, too, the significant Salesian contribution to this event. Bishop Francis Mizobe has been a driving force as chairman of the committee for the cause of this particular set of beatifications. And just to hand today in the mail, 'Full Sail with the Wind of Grace', a book published by Don Bosco Sha in Tokyo, translated into English by Izumi Sakura and Margaret Peate (Izumi Sakura is especially well-known to Salesians of the region for her translation work over many years and for her various roles in Salesian activity, more recently with DB Sha). The book contains a recommendation by Bishop Mizobe.  Also today a brief email note from Fr Frank Drohan about the beatifications. Fr Drohan is the doyen of translators in that country, and grand missionary in Japan spanning many decades.
Don Cimatti had encouraged the Salesians to study early Christian times in Japan in order to find ways of inculturation, and a number of Salesians have done so, seeking instruction too from specialists such as the late Fr Hubert Cieslik SJ.
"The stories of the martyrs, how they lived their faith in the situation they were placed in is very moving. I was impressed by how these people lived their faith in their particular situations and at the same time, their faith was so universal" Izumi says in a brief personal comment to this writer. No doubt, subsequent to the Beatification today, we will be able to read more about the martyrs.  But certainly any Salesian library around our region would benefit from a copy of the book she has translated so well. It is beautifully illustrated in colour too.
Don Bosco Sha (Salesian Press), 1-9-7 Yotsuya, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-0004 Japan. Fax:  +81 (0) 3 3351 5430. The cost, in Yen, is 1,200 as far as I can see which would be between 12-13 USD.
