Update on the post-typhoon scene for Salesians in the Philippines

CEBU:  11 November 2013 --  11 November - a day of worldwide 'remembrance', but also one where the world cannot but be saddened by the terrible destruction and loss of life in the Philippines after the passage of typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan).

The overall situation for Salesians in the Philippines, according to the bits and pieces of information that are coming through is as follows:

FIN: Manila was not so badly affected, and other houses, including those in generally badly affected areas are ok (that means the communities in Naga and Legazpi are ok).

FIS: The communities in and around Cebu City are ok. It was the northern tip of Cebu island that was in the direct path of the typhoon. There are two communities that were in the direct path, one in Barangan, East Samar and the other, Dumnagas, Iloilo. There has been no communication with these two communities - no communication has been possible. That means obviously that the Province is very concerned about them.

In both the north and south provinces, Salesians are doing their bit to be part of the relief and support network for those most affected. Obviously basic needs (shelter and food) are the most urgent.

Given that the Provincial communities in both Manila and Cebu are functioning with normal communications, any assistance that can be given could be done through these two centres.
