By Fr. Keith Amodia, SDB

Olango Island, Lapu-lapu City, Cebu, 29 January 2022 – A team headed by Fr. Godofredo Atienza, SDB, the FIS Provincial Emeritus and currently in charge of the Salesian Family Secretariat, together with the members of ADMA and a staff member from the Project Developments Office went to the island of Olanggo, Lapulapu City. They provided financial assistance to the members of the Salesian Family (ADMA) whose houses were devastated by the said super typhoon.

The island is a 20-minute boat trip from the port of Punta Engaño, Lapulapu City, which itself is in an island 30 minutes drive from mainland Cebu. Upon arrival, they were welcomed by the members of ADMA and, under the scorching heat of the sun, visited the families and houses of the affected ADMA members. The Association just established its chapter here two years ago, with around 100 families becoming members.

It has been forty-four days since Odette struck. The storm flattened houses made from light materials, open and exposed to Category 5 winds for lack of natural protection. Residents by the shore had their houses washed away in the storm surge. Houses remain in shambles. Most remain unfixed, the people having difficulty rebuilding their homes due to lack of financial resources and building materials on the island. Electricity still has not yet been restored on the island.

The recipients were very grateful for the financial aid that they have received, a timely gift to them before the feast day of St. John Bosco. Misean Cara, a mission support from Ireland, provided the assistance. This act shows us the solidarity that runs deep in the Salesian Family. The Rector Major’s Strenna encourages us to hope that more help will be extended to other Salesian Family members still suffering from the effects of Odette.
