1,224 vie for 280 places at 'Don Bosco' PP

PHNOM PENH: 23rd August 2008 -- Without seeing or hearing advertisements in newspapers, radio, TV, one thousand, two hundred and twenty four applicants sat today, 23rd August, for written examinations at Don Bosco Technical School Phnom Penh to vie for 280 places for the new school year.
Prior to these examinations, all candidates had passed an individual interview by Salesians. The interview and test, if successful, offers six choices in a two year employable skills training, viz., mechanics, electricity, automotive, printing, and hotel management/services.  To be successful, in addition to success in the exams, the trainee is selected according to certain priorities: poor and orphaned, 15-19 years old, completed Grade 9, from a large family (six siblings or more), average intelligence. Motivation to study and work and willingness to help the family after graduation are also given consideration.
On Saturday 6 September, the school will organise a Certification Day for 293 graduates from the 2007-8 school year.  But graduates have already found employment in various industries since 30 June.  The guest of honour for their graduation day will be the Hon. Ung Chhat.  He is a past pupil of the first batch of graduates from 1991-92. He now serves as deputy governor of Kep City, Kampot Province.
