It never rains - it pours! Happy feast day amidst a small miracle of (vocational) abundance

SUVA: 31st January 2008 --  Hit by category 2 cyclone 'Gene', completely awash, minus drinking water and electricity (therefore music 'a cappella', something almost unknown for Pacific Islanders), the Australia-Pacific Province nevertheless has celebrated today a small miracle of vocational abundance at Don Bosco House Nakasi, Suva, Fiji: the first profession of Brothers Sinapati Ioane, Antonio Lealea, Ralf Solomona and Peter Sua, all from Samoa, and the final profession of Brother Visesio Muliaga.  Tomorrow six novices will commence their novitiate, one from Australia, one from Fiji and four from Samoa, under the guidance of Fr Mosese Vitolio Tui.
austraLasia spoke briefly yesterday to the novice director, thanks to VOIP but more particularly thanks to the Daughters of Charity who live across the river in a two storey building that can rise above the floods and preserve a line! The four new Brothers had recently completed a computer course with the Daughters at the St Louise Centre, a Daughters and Salesian co-founded Institute, one might say, for teaching computer skills to out-of-school children and young adults seeking skills that can make them employable.
Certainly, lack of drinkable water, surrounding floods, and no electricity was not going to impede a joyful celebration of St John Bosco and the professions.  The Provincial, Fr Frank Moloney, eventually managed to get connecting flights amidst a severely disrupted transport system, to ensure his presence as the main celebrant and representative of the Rector Major for acceptance of vows.
Meanwhile the Rector Major is in Panama from where, later today, he will beam his homily via satellite to the main Mass at Valdocco's MHC Basilica.
