Salesian visitors to Solomon Islands abound in July

HONIARA: 29th July 2006 --  July has seen some important events for the PNG-SI Delegation and for the Solomon Islands part in particular. From 17th-21st July there was the visit of Fr Andrew Wong, Provincial of the Philippines North province and therefore the Provincial with overall responsibility for the Delegation led for its normal internal affairs by Fr Luciano Odorico.  Then from the 21st-29th July, four Salesian Sisters, comprising Sr Edna Mary, Provincial of the South Pacific Region province, Sr Sialei Puapuaga, Sr Sonia Murari, and Sr Anna Maria Gervasoni, visited to finalise arrangements for the opening of a Sisters' presence in Honiara next year.  An additional visitor was a Salesian priest from Piedmont, a magician who goes under the professional name of 'Mago Sales' and who strives to bring happiness to the lives of youngsters, especially the poor, through his entertaining performances.  To complete the round of visitors, though this one intends to stay put, a new confrere, Fr Albert, arrived from India to take up his role at Don Bosco Henderson in the school.
Fr Wong stressed the importance of harmony between Church and Government, and remaining strongly in touch with the people as the Salesians continue to develop their educative and pastoral community which by now involves not only a flourishing technical centre, a rural training centre, communications work for the diocese and attention to the health needs of far-flung villages through development of clinics and a hospital.
The four Salesian Sisters spent their time taking up precisely the kind of invitation Fr Wong had addressed to his own SDB community - seeing to connections with Church, Government and local people.  They were able to meet the Archbishop and to spend much time in and around the villages where they will be active.  They were made very welcome not only by their Salesian hosts but by the Archbishop, Adrian Smith, other Church personnel and members of other Congregations, especially the women's Congregations located on Guadalcanal.
