Don Bosco feast day celebrated in Daejeong, Korea

DAEJEONG: 21st October 2005 --  Elsewhere in the world one might immediately wonder - have we missed a feast day of Don Bosco somewhere along the way?  But in mid-October, Daejeong, the novitiate house in Korea, has celebrated a feast of Don Bosco for many years now.  The choice of October may have a number of motivations, but one that features strongly is to find a time in the Korean cultural calendar which is not dominated by other major celebrations like the First Full Moon, or the Lunar New Year, Spring and Harvest Festivals.  So mid-October it is.
There are six novices in the novitiate this year, and once again the celebration was an occasion to share the Salesian spirituality.  It was no small gathering.  Some two thousand people took part.  Photos of the event will be found on the ANS page of the Congregation's website.
Daejeong is a relative newcomer amongst the Salesian communities.  Some 180 kms south of Seoul, and in an area of strategic importance in South Korea, it was opened in 1992.  Besides being the novitiate, the community also provides retreats for young people, has homes for taking in young people at risk, and carries out a ministry amongst young prisoners.
