ASIAN FESTIVE CELEBRATION AT UPS

ROME: 14th January '04 -- Salesians from various parts of Asia, incorporating both the South Asia and East Asia-Oceania regions, gathered today for a celebration in the Don Bosco Community at the UPS with the two Regionals, Fr Joaquim D'Souza and Fr. Vaclav Klement ...and of course the Rector of the community, Fr. Altieri.  The gathering involved the Eucharist, and 'agape' to follow and a brief Academy and Goodnight.
The Eucharist was a multilingual experience with hymns and Prayer of the Faithful in 8 languages including English, Singhalese, Hindi, Tamil, Korean, Tagalog.  In his homily, Fr. Joaquim shared a range of significant experiences in the two regions, under the general title of 'the dawn of Asian evangelisation'.  The experiences ranged geographically from India to Samoa.
The meal was likewise a multicultural experience, all prepared by the confreres, with culinary delights like Belachang (from Myanmar), Kimchi (Korea) and a wide range of Indian specialities from hot stuff to sweets.  The 'Italian connection' was maintained via some good Piedmontese wine!
A number of special guests attended, including the Provincial, Fr. Nicolussi and Other Asian Salesians in the vicinity - Fr. Shirieda from Japan was one of these.
