Beppu, Japan, 4 September 2016 -- 2016 July issue of the Japan Salesian Bulletin (Don Bosco No Kaze - two annual issues, n.17) brings an interesting article about Oratory experience in Beppu: Valdocco of Japan. This is probably the only 'traditional' Oratory in the whole province, being restarted some 30 years ago and now active twice a week.

Indeed the whole Salesian family is involved - large group of FMA Sisters, Caritas sister of Jesus, Salesian cooperators and good number of volunteers, some of then former Oratory boys and girls. Venue for the Oratory is the playground of Beppu Catholic Church and the basement of Parish Church, about 130-140 children and youth are coming together twice a week.

There are three different learning activities like English tuition class, Japanese calligraphy and Music. Of course, there are some naughty children who like only games in the playground of the Catholic Kindergarten. Within the context of very small numbers of Japan Church, this Oratory experience with consistent number of non Christian children and youth coming together is something very special.

As in many other places, also the Salesian Cooperators of Beppu experience their ups and downs. Some 30 years ago under the leadership of late Fr. Clodoveo Tassinari (former provincial, passed away in 2012 at 99 years of age) there were more numerous, however for many years there was no new blood. Around the Don Bosco Bicentenary 2015 some committed members of the Parish and Oratory started their vocation journey of 'Salesiani Cooperatori' (GIA province is using this name in their daily life).

We believe that the poor young people will save the Salesians and the Salesian Family. The future of Salesian Charism is marked by the committed presence amongst the youth. One of the Aspirants in Beppu Center shares clearly: "I have started just to helped the games of our Oratory children. But now after taking the journey as a Salesian Cooperator I'm trying to share also my faith in Jesus as their catechist".
