RMG, 24 January 2017 -- After the appointment of the PGS Vice-province Superior Fr Peter Baquero as the Bishop of Kerema Diocese (AustraLasia 4259), the Rector Major with the consent of his council, has appointed on 23rd January 2017 Fr Alfred MARAVILLA as the second Superior of the Papua New Guinea – Solomon Islands Vice-province for the period of 6 years (2017-2023).
Fr Alfred was born Silay City, Negros Occidental (Philippines) on July 31, 1962 and made his first profession in Canlubang (Philippines) on April 1, 1982 and the perpetual profession on March 24, 1988 in Gabutu (PNG). He applied to be a missionary and after the postnovitiate he was sent to Papua New Guinea. He did his practical training in Port Moresby, Gabutu, PNG (1985-1988). He was ordained in 1992 in Silay City (Philippines) after completing his theological studies in Cremisan (Holy Land, MOR). He speaks Ilonggo, Filipino (Tagalog), English, Italian, Spanish, French and Tok Pisin (PNG).
After ordination he studied missiology (1992-1994) and dogmatic theology (2007) at Gregorian University, Rome and worked in Gabutu Don Bosco Technical School, Port Moresby, PNG (1995-1997), Savio House, PNG (1997), Gabutu, Port Moresby (1997-2002) as principal and rector. Then he was assigned as director at Goroka of the Liturgical Catechetical Institute (2002-2006) of the PNG-SI Bishops’ Conference.
After starting the doctoral studies in Rome (2008) Fr. Alfred was called by the Rector Major to serve in the Missions Sector in the General House, particularly the formation and follow-up of new missionaries, a role he continues until now. In 2013 he defended his doctoral thesis in fundamental theology on ‘Missio Inter Gentes towards a Theology of sharing the faith in East Asia in the light of the FABC’.
The young and multicultural Vice-province of PGS (Papua New Guinea – Solomon Islands) was canonically established by Fr Ángel F. Artime on December 23, 2015. Presently, the Vice-province has 47 confreres (8 Salesian Brothers, 31 Salesian Priests, 1 Deacon, 7 candidates to the priesthood) and two prenovices in the Philippines; average age of the Salesians is 43 years. One Vice-province composed of two countries has 7 Salesian presences in PNG and 2 in Solomon Islands. Majority of the works aim at the education and evangelization of the young people in need. The Salesian Family of PGS Vice-province is composed already of 8 different groups: SDB, FMA, Past Pupils of DB and Mary Help of Christians, Salesian Cooperators, ADMA, Caritas Sisters of Jesus and Michaelites (CSMA).
There are confreres of 15 different nationalities striving for communion in diversity (5 local confreres of PGS origin, 5 from Europe, 3 from America, 1 from Africa and 28 from Asia). At present there are 10 College Aspirants, 2 prenovices, 1 postnovice and 2 practical trainees from PGS countries. The Vice-province offers very favorable conditions for the practical training of young Salesian as well for temporary missionary commitment for confreres from other provinces.
Within the EAO Region we congratulate the Blessed Philip Rinaldi Vice-province confreres to their second Superior and promise our prayers and accompaniment.

Cha Bề Trên Cả đã bổ nhiệm Cha Alfred Maravilla làm tân Bề Trên của Á tỉnh PGS
Rôma 26/01/2017. Tòa thánh đã chọn Cha Peter Baquero, đương kim Bề Trên Á tỉnh PGS làm Giám Mục giáo phận Kerema. Vì thế, vào ngày 23 tháng Giêng vừa qua, Cha Bề Trên Cả cùng với sự đồng thuận của Ban Tổng Cố Vấn đã bổ nhiệm Cha Alfred Maravilla làm Bề Trên thứ hai của Á tỉnh PGS (Papua New Guinea- đảo Solomon), với nhiệm kỳ 6 năm (2017-2023).
Cha Alfred sinh ngày 31/07/1962 tại Silay, Phi luật Tân. Ngài khấn lần đầu ngày 01/04/1982 tại Canlubang và khấn trọn vào ngày 24/03/1988 tại Gatubu, Papua New Guinea. Sau thời kỳ hậu tập viện, Thầy Alfred đã viết đơn xin đi truyền giáo và Ngài được gửi tới Papua New Guinea để làm tập vụ. Ngài đến Port Moresby (PNG) để làm việc từ năm 1985 đến năm 1988. Ngài lãnh tác vụ Linh mục vào năm 1992 tại Silay, Phi luật Tân sau khi học xong chương trình thần học tại Cremisan, Đất thánh. Cha tân Bề trên Á tỉnh sử dụng được các ngôn ngữ : Tiếng Ilonggo, Tiếng Tagalog, tiếng Anh, tiếng Ý, tiếng Tây Ban Nha, tiếng Pháp và tiếng Tok Pisin (thổ ngữ tại Papua New Guinea). Sau khi chịu chức, Ngài học về ngành Truyền giáo học (từ năm 1992 -1994) và sau này học Thần học Tín Lý (năm 2007) tại Đại học Gregorian ở Rôma. Cha Alfred đã làm việc tại trường kỹ thuật Don Bosco ở Moresby (1995-1997), ở tại cộng thể Savio ở PNG (1997), và tại Gabutu (1997-2002). Tại đây Ngài làm Hiệu trưởng, và sau đó làm Giám đốc cộng thể. Ngài cũng được chỉ định làm Giám đốc Học Viện Phụng vụ Huấn giáo (từ 2002-2006). Đây là Học viện trực thuộc Hội Đồng Giám Mục Papua New Guinea - đảo Solomon.
Khi Cha Alfred bắt đầu đến Rôma để theo học chương trình tiến sỹ (2008), Ngài được Cha Bề Trên Cả chỉ định để làm việc trong ban Truyền giáo trung Ương, đặc trách đào luyện các anh em sẽ đi truyền giáo. Ngài đảm trách sứ vụ này cho đến nay. Đến năm 2013, Cha Alfred đã bảo vệ thành công luận án Tiến sỹ với đề tài ‘Truyền giáo inter Gentes với một nền thần học nhằm chia sẻ đức tin tại vùng Đông Á, dưới ánh sáng cuả Hội Đồng Giám Mục Á Châu’
Á Tỉnh PGS hiện nay là một Á tỉnh non trẻ mới được thiết lập theo giáo luật ngày 23 tháng 12 năm 2015 vừa qua. Hiện giờ Á tỉnh có 47 hội viên, gồm 8 Sư huynh, 31 Linh mục, 1 Phó tế, 7 Tư giáo và 2 thỉnh sinh đang theo học tại Phi luật Tân. Tuổi trung bình của các hội viên là 43. Á Tỉnh dàn trải trên 2 quốc gia với 7 điểm làm việc ở Papua New Guinea, và 2 điểm làm việc ở đảo Solomon. Đa phần các công cuộc tại Á tỉnh nhằm vào sứ mệnh giáo dục và Tin mừng hóa cho người trẻ nghèo khổ. Gia đình Sa-lê-diêng trong Á tỉnh gồm có 8 nhóm : SDB, FMA, Cựu học viên Don Bosco, cựu học viên FMA, Cộng tác viên Sa-lê-diêng, ADMA, các nữ tu dòng Bác Ái Chúa Giêsu và Hội dòng Michael (CSMA).
Các hội viên trong Á tỉnh thuộc 15 quốc tịch khác nhau, nhưng anh em cố gắng thể hiện sự hiệp thông chặt chẽ cho dầu có sự dị biệt về ngôn ngữ và văn hóa. Có 5 hội viên gốc Phi luật Tân, 5 hội viên gốc Âu Châu, 3 hội viên gốc Mỹ Châu, 1 anh em gốc Phi Châu và 28 anh em gốc Á Châu.
Hiện nay, Á tỉnh có 10 em tu sinh đang theo học đại học, 2 em thỉnh sinh, 1 thầy hậu tập viên và 2 thầy đang thời kỳ tập vụ. Á tỉnh PGS là môi trường rất tốt để anh em làm tập vụ, nhất là những anh em muốn đi truyền giáo. Á tỉnh có bổn mạng là Chân phước Philip Rinaldi. Chúng ta hãy cầu cho Cha tân Bề Trên Á tỉnh. Ngày nhậm chức của Ngài sẽ được thông báo sau.
