Welcoming September with Bible Quiz in Indonesia

By Fr. Peter Tukan, SDB

Jakarta, Indonesia, 3 September 2018 -- For the Catholic Church in Indonesia, every September is the Month of the Bible. This year, Bible quiz is the program of learning the Bible, participated by all 72 parishes of Jakarta Archdiocese, and this will be the event of the whole month. The focus of the participants is the family, so as to follow the theme of the program proposed by the Bible Commission of the Archdiocese, “BIBLE IN THE FAMILY”.

This is how the Holy Scripture quiz goes in the Archdiocese. A complete family (father-mother-children) is valued to be the best in its knowledge of the Bible from the other families of one basic ecclesial community (BEC) in the parish. The family, which is the winner at the level of parish, has the right to go for the higher competition that is at the vicariate level, and if it wins it will continue at the highest one, the Archdiocese level. At the end of competition, certain numbers of families will be declared winners for the first, second, third ranks and they deserve Archbishop recognition and are entitled the “Family Bible Award 2018”.

Saint John Bosco Parish in North Jakarta, located just nearby the Salesian community of Wisma Salesian Don Bosco and is ministered by three Salesian priests, conducted its first step competition on last Sunday, 2nd of September. Sixteen families were the best from the eight basic ecclesial communities of the parish.

Fransiska Murly, the in-charge of Bible ministry of the parish who spoke in the name of the parish priest, Fr Yohanes Boedi SDB, acknowledged the competence of each family in knowing the Bible and on top of that is the religious environment that each family maintains. When for example, the father could not answer the question during the quiz, the mother and children were ready to back up and vice versa.

The entire process of quiz was well participated on the part of contestants because each family showed its top ability to prove to be the winner. On the part of the spectators, the families from the eight basic communities gave their best cheers and applauses to support their contestant.

To be the judges of this bible quiz were two Salesians: Fr Ambros Widiantoro and Salesian Brother Bernardinus Mei, and Fransiska Murly, a laywoman. The winner of this Bible contest was the family from the community of Saint Jerome – “Santo Hironimus”.
