Vatican, 30 January 2016 - On the vigil of the feast of our very dear Saint John Bosco the Holy Father Francis appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Dili (East Timor) the Fr. Virgilio Do Carmo Da Silva, SDB, the Superior of the Vice Province ITM.


The Fr. Virgilio Do Carmo Da Silva, SDB was born November 27, 1967 at Venilale, in the diocese of Baucau. After primary and secondary schools of the Salesians in Fatumaca, he entered the Salesian Society of Don Bosco. The following was sent to study philosophy and theology in Manila. He made his first profession of the Salesian of Don Bosco on 31 May 1990 and his perpetual profession on 19 March 1997. He was ordained priest on 18 December 1998.


After ordination he held the following positions: 1999-2004, Assistent of the novices; 2004-2005, Economer of the Formation House in Venilale and assistant of Parish priest; 2005-2007, Studies in Rome for a Licentiate in Spirituality at the Pontifical Salesian University; 2007-2014, Master of Novices; 2009-2014, Director of the House and the Don Bosco Tecnnical High School in Fatumaca; 2015, Superior of the Vice Province ITM.


Episcopal ordination is scheduled for March 19

    Il Santo Padre Francesco ha nominato Vescovo della diocesi di Dili (Timor Orientale) il Rev.do P. Virgilio Do Carmo Da Silva, S.D.B., Provinciale dei Salesiani nel Timor Orientale.

    Il Rev.do P. Virgilio Do Carmo Da Silva, S.D.B., è nato il 27 novembre 1967 a Venilale, nella diocesi di Baucau. Dopo le scuole primarie e secondarie dei Salesiani a Fatumaca, è entrato nella Società Salesiana di Don Bosco. Di seguito è stato inviato per studiare Filosofia e Teologia a Manila. Ha emesso la prima professione con i Salesiani il 31 maggio 1990 e la professione perpetua il 19 marzo 1997. È stato ordinato sacerdote il 18 dicembre 1998.
    Dopo l’ordinazione sacerdotale ha ricoperto i seguenti incarichi: 1999-2004: Formatore dei Novizi; 2004-2005: Economo della Casa di Formazione a Venilale e Vicario parrocchiale; 2005-2007: Studi a Roma per la Licenza in Spiritualità presso la Pontificia Università Salesiana; 2007-2014: Maestro dei Novizi; 2009-2014: Direttore della Casa dei Salesiani e della Don Bosco Tecnnical High School a Fatumaca; dal 2015: Provinciale dei Salesiani.

    Fr. Virgilio do Carmo da Silva, SDB,

    The current provincial of the Salesian Congregation of Indonesia and East Timor is appointed by our Holy Father Pope Francis to be the new bishop of the diocese of Dili (the capital of East Timor). The announcement came on the eve of the feast day of our Father and founder: Don Bosco. He was born in Venilale, Baucau. He made his elementary and high school studies in the Salesian College of Fatumaca. He made his novitiate formation and first profession as a member of the Salesian Congregation in Fatumaca. He then continued with his study of Philosophy in Don Bosco College Canlubang, Philippines. After philosophy, he was sent to the community of Don Bosco Fatumaca to be the asistance for the novices. He then did his theology in Don Bosco Center of Satudies, Paranaque City, Philippines. He was ordained as a salesian priest in the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians Paranaque. After his priestly ordination, again he was sent to Fatumaca to be the in-charge of the Salesian Aspirantate. From Fatumaca he was transferred to the Minor Seminary Blessed Philip Rinaldi Venilale. From there, he was sent for further study in the Salesian Pontifical University, Rome. He finished his licentiate in Spiritual Theology. He came back to Fatumaca. He was appointed as novice master and rector of the same community. Then, he was appointed as the provincial of Indonesia and East Timor Salesian Province. He is now the bishop elect of Dili. He is going to be the second Salesian who become bishop of this diocese. The first salesian who became bishop was Mons. Belo. His episcopal consecration will take place on the 19th of March 2016 on the Feast day of St. Joseph.

    La diocesi di Dili, eretta nel 1940, è immediatamente soggetta alla Santa Sede.

    Ha una superficie di 4.750 kmq e una popolazione di 595.000 abitanti, di cui 562.000 sono cattolici. 

    Ci sono 28 parrocchie, 133 sacerdoti (62 diocesani e 71 religiosi), 1 diacono, 4 fratelli religiosi,
