By Dr. Amiel M. Yacon

Makati, Metro Manila, the Philippines, 11 March 2024 -- In a momentous gathering of minds, 36 Salesians and Lay Mission Partners from various sectors and departments of different Don Bosco schools and institutions participated in the first leg of DBEC (Don Bosco Educational Centers) Strategic Planning on March 6 and 7, 2024, at the Quaranta Hall, Braga Building, Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati.

Held for almost two days, the planning provided a platform for collaboration, feedback, analysis, and forward-thinking ideas to draw relevant themes vital for crafting the DBEC Strategic Planning.

The first day of the planning began with an opening prayer led by Br. Ronnel Tiu, SDB, DB San Jose Technical Director, followed by the welcome remarks of Fr. Jeffrey L. Mangubat, SDB, DBEC Director for TVET and DB Canlubang Rector. Dr. Amiel Yacon, managing director of DBEC, presented the planning objectives and expected deliverables.

Shortly after setting the tone, Fr. Jose Dindo Vitug, DBEC Chancellor, the lead facilitator, officially started the planning process. In the first half of day 1, Fr. Vitug began with the presentation of the humble history of DBEC, honoring the cohort of Salesians, along with Lay Mission Partners who established the association. He facilitated the review of DBEC's nature, vision, and mission through an interactive activity. Everyone received the opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions, which further enriched the discussion.

Ms. Maria Regina I. Bundang of Don Bosco Press, Inc. mentioned that the term ‘synergy’ may be considered in the improvement of the vision of DBEC as it underpins the essence of the association, which is to provide a platform for harmonious collaboration. Ms. Jhenly I. Asedillas, Deputy Executive Director - DB1TVET, seconded it. She said, “There should be synergy within DBEC as we navigate through the local and global competitions, diversity, inclusivity, and economic disparity.”

Day 1 continued with a short refresher lecture by Fr. Vitug on SWOT Analysis. Shortly after, the attendees proceeded with the SWOT analysis workshop. Five groups were tasked with identifying the strengths and weaknesses of DB centers and determining possible opportunities and threats based on external factors in a whole-system approach. The workshop was filled with meaningful brainstorming sessions and discussions among the groups.

It was a busy yet fruitful morning on March 7. Day 2 of the planning was the continuation of the SWOT analysis. The output of each of the five groups was presented to all the attendees. The session was even more worthwhile when other group members gave feedback and reactions. Some of the highlighted key points in the discussion were standardization, LMP empowerment, sustainable development, challenges in the system, and innovations.

The successful 2-day strategic planning of DBEC concluded with the presentation of the plans for Phase 2, which was led by Fr. Vitug. The attendees expressed their gratitude for being part of the planning.

Mr. Mark Carlos Tito G. Gumapon, managing director of DBTech ASEAN, shared his thoughts on his experience attending the event. He said, “The experience of witnessing the joint efforts to implement a uniform strategy throughout all Don Bosco schools and TVET facilities highlighted the importance of the Salesian Educative system.”

Phase 1 aimed at reviewing DBEC's nature, including its vision and mission, and developing a comprehensive strategic profile, providing a clear roadmap for its sustainable growth as an educational network. The anticipated Phase 2 of the DBEC Strategic Planning will be participated in by selected external individuals from different sectors and industries.
