Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 13 March 2019 -- Don Bosco Technical School, Gabutu students were live on air on the first Chat RoomSession at NBC, Port Moresby on 13thMarch, 2019.

A very relevant topic, ‘Climate Change and its effect on our lives’, was discussed by 5 students of year 11 and ITC. They shared their views on Climate Change, the need to create awareness amongst their peers and what they can do to when they enter the work place to reduce the effects of climate change. They mentioned that the leaders and those in authority need to give them the space and a platform to express themselves and share their thoughts. While on air, there was an engineer that dialled in and asked them, “How will you carry what you learn to the workplace?”. Awareness and the need to look at alternative materials that will reduce the carbon footprint was the enlightened reply. “Well done boys”, was the response from Vinna Wingur, TribeFM presenter.

Chat Room is a program that strives to share the thoughts and reflections on social issues that affect society and in turn have an impact on the fabric of our people. The weekly event is organized by CBC SOCOM in collaboration with NBC TribeFM, a youth radio station in Port Moresby.

“The five students from Don Bosco Technical School, Gabutu had the occasion to discuss the issue in a very lively and youthfully interactive session”, said NBC TribeFM presenter Vinna Wingur.

“It’s wonderful to have students share what concerns them and their lives”, said an enthusiastic Hazel Parpa, NBC TribeFM.

TribeFM Manager Matilda Gaveva looks forward to giving the young people an opportunity to host their own show.

“Giving young people a platform to share their views is building their commitment to the values that are deeply ingrained in them”, said Fr Ambrose Pereira sdb, CBC Youth and SOCOM Secretary.

"When will be our next Chat Room session?" asked Simplicio, DBTS, Grade 11 student.

The event will be rebroadcast on TribeFM and will also be televised on NBC TV.

Thanks to the principal Martian Dai, animator Jayson Jim and the students for raising their hands to prepare and be the first on the program. Schools wishing to participate in this weekly program are welcome to contact CBC SOCOM.
