Port Moresby, PNG, 13 August 2017 -- Don Bosco Technological Institute, Boroko staged the musical ‘The Witness of Peter to Jesus’ written by Jimmy and Carol Owens, on 11th, 12th and 13th with the final production on Sunday, 13th August.

‘The Witness’, a narrated musical drama, tells the story of Jesus through the eyes and experience of Peter, the Apostle and fisherman. The setting is the town of Galilee. The lives of simple fisher folk were turned upside down, when Jesus came to their town. Peter, now a ‘Fisher of Men’ shares the story of Jesus Christ, his astounding ministry, tragic death and transforming resurrection. An enthusiastic cast of 150 together with support from different trades and sectors, brought the impressive musical to life.

The production of the show required weeks of practice, late into the night. The costumes, artistically designed sets, lights, sound and vibrant costumes contributed to sharing an inspiring message in song and dance. Director of the production, Fr Clifford Morais, SDB, together with the support of Fr. Louie Castaňeda, SDB, Rector, the staff and students left no stone unturned to bring together a marvelous production.

Archbishop Kurian Mathew Yayalunkal, Apostolic Nuncio of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, Mr. Samson Wangihomie, Deputy of Teaching Commission, religious, benefactors and friends were present to enjoy the last production. Special invitees included Heads of public and private educational organizations that assist in accommodating students for the six weeks of Practice Teaching of the bachelor students and three months for In-Planting Training of the Diploma students were also present. The first two performances were dedicated to the Salesian families, relatives and friends of DBTI.

The audience said that the production was enjoyable, entertaining, uplifting and inspiring. “It was a professional show,” said Mr. Samson Wangihomie, Deputy of Teaching Commission. Mr. Samson Jawahar, Operations Manager at Trade Pacific Limited said, that he was amazed to see the students perform so well.

Eugene Turan, a 4th year MFM/Mathematics major student, was the star character in the musical. He narrated, acted and sang the life story of Jesus from the perspective of Peter, The Witness. His astounding performance and confidence was appreciated by all. “It’s marvelous how he memorized all his lines perfectly,” said Sr, Kumari Pappu FIMH, CBC Administrative Manager.

“I acted the role of John, the beloved disciple of Jesus. I enjoyed playing that part and I hope that this musical brings me closer to Jesus,” said Mackenzie Denver, second year Electronics Technology student.

“The DBTI cast showed commitment and dedication to the musical”, said Nigel Kenoty, Second year Electronics B student who had a leading role in singing and played the part of an apostle.

“Being part of the musical, I have learned to value self-discipline, teamwork and commitment. Thank you Fr. Louie and Fr. Clifford for the chance to play the part of Mother Mary,” said Amelis Barka, first year Electronics student.

“Acting as Jesus in the musical was a first time experience. I have never performed in front of big audience because I am a shy person. Coming to DBTI, I have developed in self-confidence. Thank you Fr. Clifford for trusting me,” said Joe Aoae, a first year Automotive Technology student who acted as Jesus.

As the curtain drew the musical to a close, Dr. Catherine Nongkas, principal of DBTI, expressed her gratitude to Fr. Louie Castaňeda, SDB, Rector; Fr. Clifford Morais, SDB, Treasurer and the entire cast and crew of the production. “You are the best!” she said. She thanked the audience and appreciated the support from the education and industrial sectors. “We hope that we can work together to build some partnerships in the future for the benefit training and development of our students.”
