Quetta, Pakistan, 30 April 2024 -- Don Bosco Learning Centre Quetta-Pakistan has taken a bold step towards environmental conservation, inspired by the teachings of Pope Francis and his call for planetary care outlined in his Encyclical Letter Laudato Si.

Throughout March and April 2024, the entire community of Don Bosco Learning Centre, including teachers, students, alumni, and youth, rallied under the guidance of Father Samuel Ghouri, SDB, the esteemed rector, to plant over 200 trees in and around the school compound, marking a significant commitment to combat climate change and nurture a generation of environmental stewards.

Pakistan stands among the top 5 Asian countries severely impacted by climate change, as indicated by the Global Climate Risk Index. In light of this sobering reality, the Don Bosco Learning Centre in Quetta has risen to the challenge, striving to instill a deep sense of responsibility and pride in safeguarding the school environment.

The significance of planting trees goes beyond mere symbolism. It signifies a collective effort toward a greener, more sustainable future. Careful consideration was given to selecting tree species suited to the local climate and soil conditions, ensuring their survival and maximizing their environmental benefits.

Each member of the Don Bosco community has pledged to not only plant but also nurture these trees, becoming advocates for ecological preservation. These efforts not only improve the school environment but also provide much-needed shade for students and staff, reduce air pollution, and create a tranquil atmosphere conducive to learning and community well-being.

To concretize this noble effort, Fr Samuel, SDB, inculcates in them the value of caring for our common home through seminars and formative practical inputs about environmental issues and empowers them to engage in solutions actively. The program fosters a harmonious relationship between humanity and the environment by emphasizing the intrinsic value of the care for creation and their profound connection to our ecosystem.

As the words of Saint Francis of Assisi resound, "Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Wind, and the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather through whom you give sustenance to your creatures," the Don Bosco Learning Center in Quetta stands as an inspiration of hope and action in the global fight against climate change.
