First Don Bosco Film Festival held in Manila (FIN)

MANDALUYONG - Metro Manila: January 12, 2015 - The month of January recalls to mind two great saints of the Church who were practitioners in mass media production: St Francis of Sales and St John Bosco. It is no wonder that Salesians in various parts of the world, faithful to the trends that these two models have initiated, keep on using and producing something related to mass media, for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

The Philippine-North province had carried out the first ever FIN Don Bosco Film Festival. The FIN Social Communications Team had planned and organized this event as part of the Bicentennial celebration of Don Bosco's birth. As a conclusion, last Saturday, 10th of January 2015, was the awarding ceremony held at the Audio Visual Hall of the Don Bosco Technical College in Mandaluyong. In one of the speeches, Fr. Bernard ‘Drans’ Nolasco, SDB, head of the Commission on Social Communications, highlighted the idea of using the film medium as a vehicle where we could perpetuate what Don Bosco lived for: values which Bosconians themselves learned from their Salesian and lay mentors.

This competition was open to all the youngsters of our Don Bosco FIN institutions which includes the schools, parishes, youth centers and even the seminary. The organizers had used separate criteria for submissions according to two age groups. They also had three categories:(1) short film, (2) advertisement, and (3) documentary.

A panel of judges, composed of film industry leaders in the Philippines, include Albert Michael Idioma (Film Mixer), Ferdinand Gonzaga (Multi-Media Professor), Eduardo Lingao (Journalist), Arnold Reodica (Sound Engineer), and Mark Meily (Film & TV Director). Almost all of them are past pupils of our different Don Bosco Schools and are connected to the Salesian Family.

Ed Lingao, a renowned Filipino broadcast journalist, is himself a product of Don Bosco Mandaluyong. He encouraged Bosconians to continue with what they have begun: Tell their stories through the film medium, by striving to be relevant, and focusing on the message (not on its messenger) and the audience (not on the film maker). With this message in mind, everybody in the hall during the awarding were filled with enthusiasm for the next Don Bosco Film Festival.
