Reprints and new prints: publishers on the move

ROME: 6 August 2005 -- An interesting follow-up to yesterday's news of a Salesian Studies curriculum outline and the challenge of finding the recommended texts in English.  Two immediate responses have come, one from Mumbai Province, India, the other from New Rochelle.  It is worth passing on this information.
Stocks of the well-received Borusso (Nairobi) English translation of Teresio Bosco's Don Bosco: una biografia
nuova have been exhausted.  But all is not lost.  A new translation of the original is due for publication in October this year, from Mumbai.  To some, this may seem a little odd - why two translations?  The truth lies, as pointed out in the preface to the new Mumbai edition, that the translation of T. Bosco's work was commissioned by the Mumbai Provincial back in 2002.  The Nairobi edition was published in 2003 while work was still going on with the Indian edition, translated by a spritely 87 year old Fr Moja, 71 years a missionary in India.  With the knowledge of the Borusso translation, the work continued, but with differences.
As the preface puts it: "One significant difference is that, where Borruso has decided to drop dates, names of people and of places, and historical information which in his opinion could be of interest only to Italians, the present translation retains all the details as per the original text. This has been a deliberate choice, in the firm belief that it is high time readers in the English speaking world familiarize themselves with the history and geography of Don Bosco. Besides, as explained by Fr Raineri in his preface and by Fr Teresio Bosco in his introductory note, the aim of the ‘new biography’ was precisely to steer a middle course between repetitions of ‘stories’ of Don Bosco and strictly scientific studies. Teresio Bosco wanted to provide a readable life of Don Bosco ‘that did not take for granted too many things’ and at the same time took full advantage of the vast amount of solid scholarship that has been building up about Don Bosco and his times, thanks to the efforts of people like Stella, Desramaut, Braido, Wirth, Valentini and Molineris".  October then, and when it becomes available, austraLasia will let you know where and how...
From the US comes an indication that there may be a move soon to a reprint of Stella's first volume,
Don Bosco: Life & Work (including its appendix on Charles). This has yet to be confirmed, but it looks likely.  There are also two new books available for whomsoever is interested in them.
(1) Balbi, Mario, SDB [ed.]. The Unpublished Don Bosco. 2005. Translation and updating of Fr. Michele Molineris’s Don Bosco Inedito: background and anecdotes from the oral traditions of people associated with DB and their families; material not found in BM or other standard lives of the Saint. 644 pp pb  (Xlibris)  1-4134-8691-6  $27.00
(2) Ceria, Eugenio, SDB. Profiles of Thirty-three Salesian Coadjutor Brothers, trans. Vincent Zuliani. 2005.  Character sketches of the first brothers in the Society, most of them formed by Don Bosco. iii + 154 pp pb. 0-89944-181-5  $10.00.  This may be of particular interest for Brothers in the EAO region in the light of next year's assembly.

These may be ordered directly from New Rochelle's distributor at srmdist@gte.net  The usual discounts for Salesians and for bulk orders apply.
