MELBOURNE: 16th Feb -- BIshop Carlos Belo officially opened the Congress of Salesian Brothers yesterday at a gathering representing thirteen Asia-Pacific nations as well as Italy and the USA - some 74 delegates in all.  The Salesian Nobel laureate's presence was not the only overtone of justice for the poor and down-trodden.  A highlight of the opening cermeony was a special blessing by Ms Vicki Walker and Betty Pike of the Melbourne Aboriginal Catholic Mission.
Salesian students from an area encompassing some 300 kms were present to assist with music and hospitality. Keynote addresses were given by Bro. John Rasor (USA - SUO), Fr. Joaquim D'Souza (Rome), Fr. John Murphy (Provincial AUL) and Bro. Michael Lynch, the Australian organizer of the Congress. Many of the Provincials of the Australasia region are present for the event.
This news service will endeavour to keep readers of the region well-informed of the progress of the Congress which has as its theme: The Salesian Brother -Opportunities and challenge for the Year 2000 and beyond.
